I really love how literal and fun this piece is. I love music so much! I’m a big fan of Tyler, the Creator, and Don’t Tap the Glass had just come out at the time. He did some interviews about it, and hearing him explain how everything came together was so cool! He mentioned that he had a specific vision for the album, that he wanted to dance, and didn’t want a project as heavy as his previous one Chromokopia. He also said each song draws inspiration from different regions.

I really appreciate articulate and intentional music, and I’d been finding a lot of that during this time, so I made this! Similarly to Tyler, I knew exactly how I wanted this to look and didn’t stray too far from my original concept drawing. It came out so, so nice. I love it!

Visual Breakdown

The beanie over the eyes is a bit of a nod to my brother (who just so happens to make amazing music too! Find him on any music streaming service as JVDN). On a family trip to Disneyland, my brother pulled his beanie over his eyes as soon as we took off. This was January 2019, and ever since, I couldn’t get that image out of my head. I thought it was such a cool visual!

The color palette and slight but impactful black outline instantly gave me Spider-Verse vibes, which is why I had to throw in the “spidey-senses.” The vibrant shades, layered washes, and messing around with paint-to-water ratios made it super fun to work on. And those subtle but heavier shadows?! They really pulled it all together and gave the whole thing that comic book feel I was going for.

I LOVE THIS PIECE (can ya tell?)
